NEW TO MX? HERE'S WHAT TO EXPECT ON EVENT DAY
Your first motocross event can feel a bit overwhelming, but don’t worry – we’re here to help! Here’s a step-by-step guide to ensure you have a smooth, fun day at the track.
Before Race Day:
Practice Riding: It’s a good idea to practice riding on a track with others before your first event. Check out our Places to Ride page for details on Marlborough's public and private tracks.
Prep Your Bike & Gear:
Ensure your bike is well-maintained, fueled, and ready to go.
Lay out your gear the night before – helmet, boots, gloves, goggles, body armour, and anything else you need.
Don’t forget to get a good night’s sleep and stay hydrated!
On Race Day:
Arrive Early & Set Up: Get to the track early to set up your pit area. If you know someone already, try to park near them; otherwise, introduce yourself to your neighbours – motocross riders are a friendly bunch!
Sign-In & Licensing:
Head to the sign-in area to register.
Choose your class – for fun days, we recommend Senior B or Junior B, depending on your age.
If you don’t have an MNZ license, you’ll need to purchase a day license. (Tip: Keep your day licences – you can redeem the cost of two against your first race licence!)
Bike Check & Gear Up:
Walk the Track: Walking the track helps you learn the layout and spot any tricky sections. Just make sure you're back in time for the rider's briefing.
Riders' Briefing:
Attendance is compulsory. This briefing covers the day's schedule, track rules, and important safety information. Pay close attention to practice and race orders.
Practice:
Practice gives you a feel for the track. Take it steady – it’s not a race, so use this time to get comfortable with the terrain.
Race Time:
Fun Days (Bungy Start): The starter will raise a 10-second board. When it flips to 5 seconds, the bungy will release within the next few moments – and you're off!
Major Events (Falling Gate Start): The clock will start, and once the arrow reaches the green zone, the gate will drop. Remember, the gates fall forward – if you go too early, you'll get stuck.
Enjoy the Day!
Motocross is all about fun, learning, and community. Ride safe, have a blast, and don’t hesitate to ask if you need help – we're all here to support each other.
See you at the track! 🌟
